San Francisco Area Moving Resellers
San Francisco Area Moving Resellers
Below is a list of moving related sites that don't do moves themselves, but offer to act as go-betweens for customers and movers. Some are lists of moving companies supported by advertising, or as a public service, which we can't object to. Others are different. They have interjected themselves as unneeded and unwanted middlemen in the moving process, so thoroughly spamming Google and other search engines that it becomes almost impossible to find a real moving company using a search engine- only their sites appear anywhere near the top.
Typically they offer, at no cost to the consumer, a series of bids from local moving companies- sounds good, right? What they don't tell you is how they actually make their money. They do this by charging the moving company, and not by jobs actually awarded, but by any lead they provide, with costs up to $25 per lead. They therefore have an incentive to get as many moving companies as possible bidding on your job so they fill their pockets. What's wrong with that? Suppose they sell your job information to ten moving companies for $25 each. They make $250 (while the cost of operating their site is probably less than that each year). The cost of doing your job has cost the individual moving company that got the bid $25, but the local moving community $250. Who pays for that in the long run? You do, with higher prices.
And there's more. Movers using these middlemen find the price of getting jobs so high there is a real incentive to cut back elsewhere (because the lowest bid often gets the job). Movers are replaced with laborers, truck maintenance is deferred, and there is tremendous incentive to under-bid a job to get it- and raise the price on the day of the move. Well that's no problem, right? If you have a bad experience you can report it to the site and others won't be so unfortunate. Wrong. That just gives less than reputable moving companies the incentive to change their name and phone number more often. So if you do choose to use one of these services, it really is important that you check the reputation of the company at the
Better Business Bureau, and to make sure they have been in business a good long time.
Why are we providing this list? Not all of them operate in an objectionable way, and we're trying to provide a fairly complete (though not exhaustive) moving resource here, and ultimately, the decision is up to you. We hope if you have a local San Francisco Bay Area move you'll just pick up the phone can call us,
strongyoungmovers.com at 510-290-6345, and give us a crack at it, or check out our Moving Resources page where we list more than 200 other Bay Area movers, both local and long haul, with names, addresses, phone numbers, and web sites (where available) that you can check out without giving your name, your phone number, and your email address, but if you want to go the middleman route, the list is here.
And if you really are considering using one of these, "movers will compete for your job" sites, click about a dozen of them and see if you notice anything familiar. Most are built on the same template, meaning they were sold as turnkey businesses to people with no experience in moving (ever seen those late night infomercials- "Invest in the internet with a turnkey business. Make cash fast with no experience and no work."), or they're ultimately owned by the same people who really are trying to make sure nobody can find anyone but them in one of their many guises.
